Truck Back up Cameras
Veteran truck drivers know that backing up has always been a problem. Rearview mirrors seldom allow drivers to see pedestrians and traffic without at least one blind spot, and though truckers might be acting responsibly while backing up, they can’t always trust that others will not jump into the line of fire at the last minute.
It’s for this reason that backing up has gotten high tech in the world of trucking. With sensors and video monitors in their cabs, truckers can check to make sure the path behind them is clear just as easily as they would watch scenery fly by on a television.
For example, Advanced Transportation Technology offers the Wireless Dual Backup Camera System, which boasts a seven-inch, color LCD screen monitor, two Infrared Nigh Vision Wireless CCd Cameras, a Wireless Interface Control Unit, and a remote control. The monitor can be mounted on the cab’s dashboard, in the dashboard, or on the windshield and cameras are positioned in order to eradicate blind spots. The camera can be easily moved as drivers pick up different trailers, and the wireless transmission allows cameras to report back to the monitor without wires that could be easily loosened or broken during travel.
This camera monitoring system is unique in that it can be activated automatically when backing up and the LCD monitor automatically alternates between cameras for viewing. Though automatic monitoring may be useful and convenient, truckers who wish to switch the system on or switch back and forth between cameras manually can opt to do so.
For just under $800, truckers can choose an alternate system of three cameras. The VisionStat Side View Triple Camera Video System includes the two side cameras that can be adjusted similarly to side view mirrors, according to the manufacturer, in addition to a third camera specially designed for rear view monitoring. This camera can be used for rear viewing throughout the duration of the driver’s journey.
According to the triple camera system’s manufacturer, the system’s cameras are designed to work in conditions without optimum lighting. Like Advanced Transportation Technology’s system, VisionStat’s monitor includes an LCD display that can be mounted in a variety of places to increase safety and convenience. Unlike the dual system, however, the VisionStat system includes a speaker that allows the driver to hear sounds made in the back of the trailers.
Whether you choose the Advanced Transportation Technology model, or VisionStat’s triple model, having a video backup system makes the life of a trucker safer and more convenient. No more craning your neck to see out both side mirrors and inching out of close spaces with your eyes squeezed shut, praying you won’t hit anything. Instead, by allowing technology to be your guide, you can slip out of close areas without ever again being worried about the damage you might do.
