Wabash Rebounds – Adds 200 New Jobs to Meet Tanker Contract
Wabash needs no introduction; a major semi trailer manufacturer and one of the most important players in the trailer market in North America. Wabash has entered into a five year contract with Sabre Manufacturing to manufacture tanker trailers in Indiana (the initial contract calls for 2,500 tanker trailers). The contract will provide jobs for more than the 200 immediate hiring slots, but the new jobs are being created immediately to help ramp up for the new order and also to act as a springboard for further hires as the economy recovers and order books are being filled.
The company is investing $2.5 million in its existing plant and will is hiring certified welders immediately, with 100 slots available for new hires immediately and a further 100 jobs needing to be filled shortly after 2011.
The new job announcements come on top of the additional 500 jobs which have already been announced by Wabash. Wabash has demonstrated a remarkable turnaround after the recession. In 2009, production plummeted to 12,000 trailer untis from 32,000 in 2008. Production has yet to return to pre-recession levels with 2010 production managing 24,822 trailers actually shipped in 2010 – still, this was sufficient to put Wabash into the #1 trailer spot for last year, though the company was taken to the very brink of disaster with the worst recession we have experienced in over 60 years.
