How to Choose a Semi Trailer

There are many types of semi trailers available.  Determining which are suitable for your needs will be based on several factors such as type of cargo, the capacity needed and how the equipment or materials will be loaded and removed.  Researching available options online is a great way to get started.  Semi trailers are available new, used and in custom made models.

Type of Cargo

There are numerous options to choose from when deciding on the type of semi trailer needed for the specific cargo.  Transporting dry goods can be accomplished in dry freight vans or high cube dry containers.  Reefer trailers are suitable for moving food and other perishable items.  Open top trailers give flexibility for bulky items such as scrap and timber.  Heavy equipment that needs to be loaded from the top or side is ideal for flat bed trailers.  Items such as pipes and machinery are a good choice for this.  Platform or flatbed trailers are suitable for oddly shaped materials that will not fit in other types of containers.

Capacity

The capacity of a trailer is either measured in the amount of weight a trailer can carry or the total amount of space it can hold.  For large hauls, look for a capacity, in tons, suitable for the equipment.  If transporting merchandise such as dry goods, food or scrap, ensure the space available is sufficient to accommodate the load.

Loading and Unloading

Most trailers will allow top or rear loading and unloading with the use of a forklift or crane.  This is perfect for merchandise, livestock and food.  There are also side loading options called curtain side semi trailers.  These can be used with lumber and pipes for easy unloading.  Some trailers include ramps or tilt mechanisms for easy unloading of materials of heavy equipment.  This is useful for heavy machinery that can be driven up the ramp onto the trailer.

Determining the specific needs based on the type of cargo to be hauled and where it will need to be transported are basic considerations for choosing the ideal semi trailer.  Researching manufacturers online will give an idea as to they make and model preferred.  Choose new, used or custom semi trailers to fit the needs of the individual.
